May is a beautiful time to reflect on all things motherhood as we celebrate Mother’s Day. In the Catholic Church, we devote this month particularly to our Holy Mother, Mary. As a catholic wedding photographer, Four Loves Photo and Film witnesses a variety of Marian Devotions throughout the year.
What is a Marian Devotion?
The Marian Devotion is the Catholic tradition of honoring Mary with physical objects such as flowers, rosaries, and scapulars. Couples can incorporate these objects throughout the wedding day in various ways. Most commonly, we see couples bring a bouquet of flowers to a statue of Mary before or during the wedding ceremony. Other couples may choose to honor Mary by wrapping rosaries around their bridal bouquets. Here are some ways that Four Loves Photo and Film have seen couples honor Mary at a Catholic wedding.
Cassie’s Private Marian Devotion
The bride, Cassie, desired a private moment in prayer with the Blessed Mother before the Nuptial Ceremony. Cassie took a bouquet to Mary before the wedding, asked for intercession, and then returned to the chapel to pray with her dad.
For couples preferring a more private way to honor Mary at their Catholic Wedding, Cassie’s quiet moment of prayer before the wedding would be a recommended inspiration.

Shelby and Brian’s Catholic Wedding Day Rosaries
At this Catholic wedding, Shelby and Brian both carried a rosary with them throughout the day. During their wedding mass, the couple brought a single flower to a statue of Mary to honor her and ask for her intercession. Shelby and Brian later prayed a decade of the rosary together during the portrait time after mass.

A Sacred Medal of Mary in Abby’s Catholic Wedding Dress
A more unique way to honor Mary, Abby sewed a sacred medal of Mary into her wedding dress. She placed it near her heart on the dress to serve as a reminder of Mary’s love for us as our spiritual mother.
Besides this creative devotion to Mary, Abby also had a beautiful Marian tattoo on her arm!
Honoring Mary at a Catholic Wedding is a beautiful way to ask for the Blessed Mother’s intercessions for your marital vocation. If you are a couple preparing for the sacrament of marriage, be sure to ask your parish about appropriate ways to include a Marian Devotion in the wedding!
